Best Grant Resource

Well, by now you are well on your way to finding, and applying for grants to get assistance as a single mom. Maybe you don’t have a lot of time, or a lot of energy. Maybe you can’t scour the internet all day and night looking for each and every available grant out there. I mean, really? Who has time for that? Not this single mom, that’s for sure!

If this sounds like you, you might be wondering where you can find lots of info packed into one place. A question we get a lot is “What is the ONE best resource online for finding and applying for grants for single moms?” Today we are here to answer that question for you!

I would have to say that by far, the best resource online for finding and appyling for grants is the FAFSA.gov website. This is the holy grail of educational financial assistance, all in one place. The FAFSA site is the first place to go to get money for college.

The first thing that you need to do when going to the FAFSA website is to find your school’s code. This is a code that you will have to enter for each school that you wish to apply for. It is also known as a federal school code. Each school will have a different code. It is very easy to find your prospective school’s code through the easy search menu. You can even select just the state of the school you want to go to and then browse all of the schools that they have listed. You can also use the federal school codes to compare the stats of up to ten schools at a time. This makes it really easy to see such things as tuiton rates, graduation rates, etc, side by side.

The reason that I think that the FAFSA.gov site is the best one for obtaining grants for single moms is because it is, in a sense, a one stop shop. You just fill out the form, and FAFSA does the rest. It will send all of your information to the schools that you choose for you. Filling out the FAFSA form is quick and easy! If you feel like you do need help, check out the great video here to guide you through the process: click here. If you need help while filling out the form, there is lots of help available on the FAFSA website as well. You can click on lots of help tabs to get more info, and there is even a live help tab to let you talk to someone if you would rather get some personalized answers to questions. Something that you should remember is that you should NEVER pay for help with your FAFSA forms. There are plenty of ways to get help for free! Anyone asking you to pay for help, is NOT out to help you!

If for some reason you can not complete a FAFSA online, there are a few other options available. There is a FAFSA that you can get in a PDF format to print, fill out, and mail back, or you can even request a paper version by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID. With all of these different options available, there is no reason while you shouldn’t be able to fill out a FAFSA. They make it so easy!

What kinds of grants might the FAFSA form help me get?

There are several options. One very popular one is the Pell Grant. Something very interesting about the Pell Grant: The maximum award amount ($5500) is automatically awarded to any student whose parent died in military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001. Another thing that you don’t need to worry about is age. Even if you are an older student, age is not a factor in detirmining award status. You will be considered for awards just the same as a freshman student who is just out of high school.

There is another grant called the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity grant. This grant is for students who exhibit extreme financial need. Students who have a low EFC (Expected Family Contribution) after filling out the FAFSA, will be considered first for the FSEOG. This grant can award up to $4000 per year! That’s a great amount!

Another popular grant is called the TEACH grant. These grants are for students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary school that serves students from low-income families. This grant can also provide up to $4000 per year, so it can be a great resource for students that are planning to become teachers! There are some stipulations for this award, so check into it thoroughly if interested.

There are also many, many grants available from individual colleges and universities. You will need to contact the financial aid office at the school of your choice to find out more about these options. These can vary greatly from school to school, and the financial aid department at your school can help with this!

There are also many loan programs available. If this is something you are interested in, the FAFSA site can assist you with that as well. There are a ton of additional resources that the FAFSA website provides! There are worksheets to help you prepare for your FAFSA, there are scholarship search programs, there are career planners to help you choose a major. There are even loan repayment calculators! There are even resources available on the FAFSA site for kids as young as elementary school age!

As you can see, the FAFSA.gov website would have to be the best single resource for finding educational grants. It is sponsored by the federal government, so you know the site is legit and safe. You can find anything you are looking for in regards to student financial aid there, and even get personalized help if you need it!
